Staff at the hospital worked with Google to develop new feature
The technology means devices can be controlled by raised eyebrows
Three residents of the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (RHN) have featured in a promotional video that they helped Google develop.
The video for the Android Accessibility Suite ‘Camera Switches’ features Gary, Antonia and Dr Richard.
The RHN says that many of its patients and residents have different accessibility needs, and use technology such as Eye Gaze to control their devices. The RHN’s Compass team worked with Google to beta test the ‘Camera Switches’ feature and were asked to find residents who would like to feature in the campaign. The filming took place this August.
This new feature, now available on Android devices, allows your smartphone to be controlled by chosen gestures – such as looking to the left to scroll through a menu and opening your mouth to make a selection.
The video aims to show just how useful the feature can be for people with different accessibility needs.
Last month, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) carried out an unannounced inspection at the hospital. The RHN has been awarded a ‘Good’ rating in all five domains and overall. At a previous inspection, the rating was requires improvement.
