Local businesses on the Lower Richmond Road are finding customers are deterred by the lack of spaces available and the prohibitive costs of parking around the Lower Richmond Road. There is a petition available for your signature if you support the proposal and to make it easier the petition can now be be completed online.

In neighbouring Barnes, Richmond Council offers residents 30 minutes' free parking using the Richmond Card, however the system does not offer any free parking to shoppers from outside of the borough.

Richmond Card Leopold Road SW19

All shoppers in Wimbledon Village and the Leopold Road SW19 area benefit from 20 minutes' free parking using the the Pay & Display machines which issue a a 20-minute free ticket when the green button is pushed. The Leopold Road area is similar in size and independent businesses to those found on the Lower Richmond Road, the free parking scheme was introduced in Leopold Road in 2012.

Julie Dangoor who runs The Political Gallery, and is a resident in Barnes told this web site: "A friend came to visit me in the gallery recently and was forced to pay £3 for an hour's parking. This is a ridiculous sum! She will not be returning in a hurry. In Barnes the meters cost £1.10 per hour, and many roads are free after 12pm...and we have the Card."

Julie has started a petition to Wandsworth Council to ask for the provision of 30 minutes' free parking to all shoppers on the Lower Richmond Road. To add your name to the petition, you can either go online or pop down to the Political Cartoon Gallery at 16 Lower Richmond Road SW15 1JP between 10.30am-5.30pm, Tuesday-Saturday.

Petition to introduce 30 minutes’ free parking for shoppers in the area

We, the shopkeepers and residents of Lower Richmond Road, Putney SW15, petition Wandsworth Borough Council to introduce subsidised parking on Lower Richmond Road and its surrounding side streets, in the form of 30 minutes’ free parking in existing metered parking bays.

Currently, there is very limited, expensive, parking in the Putney area, which has deterred shoppers and has led to fewer customers in our shops. With the introduction of 30 minutes’ free parking at metered parking bays, we the undersigned believe that customers will be encouraged to shop locally.

Trade in small shops in the area will increase, as it has done in Wimbledon and Barnes Villages, both of which have introduced a period of free parking at meters.
This can only be of benefit to the shop owners, workers and residents of Putney.
