Two more Putney Schools also recognised in Wandsworth/GLL Heritage Awards for Schools competition results

Pupils, parents, teachers and head teachers from each of the winning schools were invited to a town hall presentation hosted by the outgoing mayor of Wandsworth Cllr Richard Field in one of the last public events of his mayoral year.

First prize went to Our Lady of Victories School who researched the history of their area. The research team won a thousand pounds for their school, plus medals and a plaque.

Two schools were highly commended: St Boniface School in Tooting which researched the history of Mr Drouet’s Establishment for Pauper Children, and All Saints Putney which looked at the story behind the Putney Velodrome and Raneleigh House. Each team won £600 for their school.

Two schools were commended: St Mary’s RC Battersea which explored the history of Queenstown Road-based Victorian beverage company Pure Water, and Putney High School for research into the school during war time. They both won £400.

The competition was the brainchild of Cllr Field three years ago. He said: “An understanding of local history is vital if we are to give our young people a sense of place and belonging in our diverse society, and of who made Wandsworth what it is today. It was great to see young people engage so enthusiastically with our historic past.”

The competition was sponsored by Greenwich Leisure Limited, the council’s library and heritage service contractor.
