Lock-down walks inspire youngsters' eco-advocacy

A Putney Primary school has received an award from The Woodland Trust following the work done by its eco-conscious youngsters.

Students at Oasis Academy were given a gold Green Tree Schools Award due to their green activities which continued through the lockdown when restrictions allowed.

The pupils joined together virtually for an assembly to read ‘The Man Who Planted Trees’ and reflect on one person’s ability to make a big difference for the better. They also found inspiration for advocacy from trees spotted during ‘lock-down walks.’

After schools returned, students were able to come together again in the wooded area near the school and explore the grounds from different creature’s perspectives. One Year 2 Student at Oasis Academy Putney who participated in the activities said “I loved looking up at the trees pretending to be an ant – they looked huge!”

The Green Tree Schools initiative, which has seen more than 12,000 schools sign up since it was launched in 2008, offers the opportunity to bring the great outdoors, wildlife and green issues into the classroom.

Schools win awards for participating in green activities, which include tree planting, reducing carbon emissions and recycling.

Established in 1972, the Woodland Trust now has over 1,000 sites in its care covering over 22,500 hectares.

Katie Davies, Outdoor Learning Teacher at Oasis Academy Putney, said, “We are thrilled to have been awarded Gold for the Woodland Trust Green Tree Schools Award. The unpredictability of the past months made us even more grateful for the beauty of nature surrounding our school and our homes.”

Jenny Parris, Principal of Oasis Academy Putney, commented on the award saying, The Woodland Trust Green Tree Schools Award has encouraged outdoor learning and inspired children about trees which has been so important during these unusual times. I am so impressed with all that staff and children have valued and experienced through the achievement of the Gold Award.

The Woodland Trust’s vision is to see a UK rich in native woods and trees for people and wildlife. The charity is dedicated to creating new woodland with help from communities and schools and protecting and restoring ancient woodland for future generations to cherish.
