John Fuggles, Manor Fields Board Director, said:"We need more charging points to make electric cars a more realistic alternative. At Manor Fields we have taken the initiative and we hope this is the first of many such examples across London."

The investment has been welcomed by Wandsworth Council's transport spokesman Cllr Russell King as a boost for the fledgling electric vehicle market. He said:
"It's terrific to see a private housing estate installing charging points. Every new piece of infrastructure helps to make electric motoring more accessible and we hope more private institutions will follow the example set at Manor Fields.

"The council also has a role to play which is why we have installed publically accessible charging points across Wandsworth. These facilities are part of the Source London Network so scheme members can also top-up their batteries at hundreds of other sites across the capital."

Electric cars produce no exhaust emissions and have the potential to dramatically improve air quality.

Air pollution is a health issue right across London and particularly on Putney High Street where a major campaign is underway to reduce the levels of traffic pollution.

The Manor Fields is located in a conservation area, adjacent to Putney Heath and Wimbledon Common.
