A riverside yacht club in a quiet residential street in Putney has been prevented from selling alcohol and laying on entertainment to its members into the early hours of the morning.

A flood of complaints from neighbours prompted councillors to refuse an application from the Hurlingham Yacht Club in Deodar Road to stay open until 2am at weekends.

Instead the club will have to stick to its existing licensing hours of 10.30pm on Sunday's and 11pm on other days of the week.

Councillors on the licensing sub-committee heard that 16 neighbours had objected to the application citing concerns about increased noise and nuisance from the yacht club. They were backed up by a report from the council's noise team, which highlighted the lack of adequate sound-proofing at the venue.

Councillors heard that the club is surrounded by residential properties, is constructed almost entirely from wood, has single glazed windows and offers no sound insulation.
