"I’ve learned not to particularly answer hypothetical questions"

Putney MP Justine Greening has dodged questions on whether she plans to resign if the third runway at Heathrow airport gets the green light later this month.

In an interview on ITV's 'Preston on Sunday' (9 October)the education secretary was questioned over grammar schools, and immigration as well as the expansion of Heathrow.

When asked what action she would take of a third runaway is given the green light Ms Greening would not be drawn as to her subsequent actions saying: "During the time I’ve been in politics I’ve learned not to particularly answer hypothetical questions about decisions that haven’t been taken, and on timelines that we don’t know really what they’ll be."

Putney's MP has always been adamantly against the expansion and her web site states:
'Justine is determined to continue to protect our local quality of life so that we have a proper break from aircraft every day. Earlier this year she made sure that residents knew when the Airports Commission consultation was running, so we could all have our say and respond. Justine will continue to stand up for the thousands of residents who are concerned about aircraft noise and she'll keep working to make sure our local community is listened to.'

Her colleague Boris Johnson appears to have softened his views on Heathrow expansion despite earlier pledging to lie down in front of bulldozers should construction work start on a new runway. He is now telling people that he believes it is better to carry on the fight from within the Government.

Neighbouring MP Zac Goldsmith has threatened to resign if the third runway is approved.
