Woman Cyclist killed in town centre

Residents believe rush hour death caused by roadworks barriers

A woman cyclist was killed on Tuesday morning after falling in front of a lorry.

The victim, who has not yet been named, is believed to have caught her bag on roadworks barriers. She fell under the wheels of the lorry and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Upper Richmond Road was closed for a time following the incident

Local workers and residents have complained that the barriers had been in place for sometime without work taking place

The driver of the lorry was working for County Durham haulage company and was reported to be unhurt but in a state of shock following the incident. Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.
