A picture of a man who was walking near to the scene of a rape on Putney Heath earlier this year has been released by police who believe he may be able to help identify the man responsible. There is no suggestion that the witness being sought is a possible suspect.

At about 10pm Tuesday, 12 April, a 26-year-old woman was walking home along Roehampton Lane, SW15. As she neared the junction with Alton Road, she was approached by a man. The man dragged the woman onto Putney Heath, believed via Ponsonby Road, where he raped her.

Detectives from the Met’s Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Command have recovered CCTV from the surrounding area. As part of the investigation they have identified a man who was walking nearby at around the time of the attack who may be able to assist the investigation.

Detective Constable Rob Way, who is carrying out the investigation, said,"I am really keen to identify this man who may have vital information about the attack. He was not involved in the offence, but given how close he was to the offence he could have seen or heard something that can help us catch the suspect. If you know this man, or if this is you, please get in touch with us."

The suspect is described as aged in his late twenties to early thirties, with an olive complexion and thick black hair. He was wearing a dark jacket and baggy trousers.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the investigation team on 020 8721 4106, or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
