A British tennis professional has been fined after she was caught speeding along Priory Lane in Roehampton.

29-year-old Heather Watson, currently ranked 59th in the world and number two in the UK, was found to have driven at 38mph in a 20mph zone on 22 July last year.

It was also found that she had been driving without insurance. She had been using an E-class Mercedes belonging to her boyfriend Courtney Duffus and she told police that she had believed that an insurance policy for a vehicle she owned in her native Guernsey covered her for the other car.

She pleaded guilty to speeding and driving without insurance in absentia at Bromley Magistrates’ Court and received a £1,900 fine and six points on her licence as well as being ordered to pay £290 in court fees and costs.

She has not responded to press requests for comment.
