Transport for London (TfL) are seeking your views on proposals to:
• change the frequency and route of bus route 485 which runs from Hammersmith via Barnes and Putney to Wandsworth
• make the current temporary curtailment of Route 283 between Hammersmith Bus Station and Barnes Wetland centre permanent.

The local pressure group Bring the 22 Bus to Barnes shared their response to the proposal with this site: "We welcome the proposed increase in frequency of the 485 during the day and the provision of a valuable evening and Sunday service. However we feel that the frequency of the bus is insufficient and would urge TfL to consider 5 buses per hour which would provide a more effective east-west communication link".

The spokesperson continued: "Given the demand by residents for an east-west link, the emergency measures and the frequent temporary closures to Hammersmith Bridge, and, the need for a more frequent service to Wetlands, we urge TfL to implement the increase in frequency as a priority and before the route change, which can only take place once traffic orders are completed which often can take many months".

Finishing: "This proposal does not address the need for a direct bus which connects Barnes to the hospitals, schools and amenities on the 22 bus route and connects to central London. We continue to urge TFL to extend the 22 bus to Barnes".

What are they proposing?

At present, route 485 runs every 30 minutes, Monday to Saturday daytime only (from about 07:00 to 20:00), using single deck buses. TfL propose:
• Increasing the frequency of Monday to Saturday daytime services from two to four buses an hour (every 15 minutes) and introducing evening services (two buses per hour) until midnight.
• Introducing a daytime and evening service on Sundays (two buses per hour) from about 07:30 to midnight.
• Changing the route between Putney and Wandsworth to run via Putney High Street and Upper Richmond Road rather than Putney Bridge Road,
• Extending the route to include Wandsworth Riverside Quarter and installing a new bus stand here
• Permanently curtailing route 283 so it runs between East Acton and Hammersmith Bus Station only at all times.

Why are they proposing this?

TfL say they want to deliver a more frequent bus service between Hammersmith and Wandsworth and provide Wandsworth Riverside Quarter with better connections to public transport – in response to requests from local residents.

They say the proposed change of route via Putney High Street and Upper Richmond Road also creates more connectivity with the wider transport network, since it passes Putney National Rail station as well as East Putney Underground station.

There would be a reduction in frequency of route 209 buses (Hammersmith - Mortlake) by 2 per hour during the day Monday to Saturday, to keep the number of buses over Hammersmith Bridge constant. As a result, buses on route 209 would run every 6 minutes in the peak period and every 7-8 minutes off-peak.

However, the increased frequency of service on Route 485 means the number of buses between Hammersmith and Barnes would be unchanged during the day on Monday to Saturday, and increase at other times.

The loss of service resulting from permanent curtailment of Route 283 would also be offset by the more frequent Route 485 service.

Putney Bridge Road would lose the 2 buses an hour of the current 485 service but would continue to be served by 24-hour bus route 220 (every 5-8 minutes during the day) and bus route 270 (every 10-12 minutes during the day).

The proposed changes would be introduced from late 2018, subject to the outcome of this consultation, further approvals (including implementation of a right turn for buses from Upper Richmond Road into Putney High Street) and the availability of funding.
