During the busy lunch hour this Saturday the awning above the popular patisserie and cafe Maison Blanc sheared off bringing concrete down and seriously injured two men.

Witnesses reported that the emergency services were quick to respond and that the injured were lucky to have two doctors passing the incident who quickly came to their assistance.

The men are thought to be related but this has not been confirmed and have been taken to the Charring Cross Hospital. One gentleman had severe fractures to his tibia and fibula and the second has head injuries.

Cllr Rosemary Torrington has confirmed that " The Head of the Council's Design and Technical Services has been asked to organise a safety check of all the on street awnings."
