Giant letters spelling out PUTNEY have become a local landmark after being placed on the High Street.

Originally created as part of the Coronation celebrations, the large wooden letters have been positioned outside the former premises of Marks and Spencer.

The figures were originally cut out by a local carpenter and then residents were invited to come and paint them red, white and blue, with some gold on Monday 8 May. Children were asked to paint something about the Coronation or something they loved about Putney on the letters.

Putney BID says, “As expected, we had lots of children excited to get involved, aprons were on hand to stop the paint splashing any coronation costumes. We were keen for people of all ages to get involved so they could feel like part of the community. This led to some interesting designs! We love the Union Jack design on the ‘U’ and the many I love Putney’s.”

After the Bank Holiday weekend, Putney BID decided that they would help to brighten up the empty unit which the retailer left in 2018 . Some geraniums in planters have been added provided by Noor which is located outside Putney Arts Theatre.
